BREEDER'S CUP AGAINST ANABOLIC STEROIDS

The Breeder's Cup has banned Anabolic Steroids this year.

Used on Thoroughbred racehorses to help them win, it is a chemical that may prove to provide problems with health. It is time for racing to ban them altogether, and the Breeder's Cup Associates have been the first to do so. All horses will be tested before the race, and if they are found with the steroids, their trainer will be banned from the race for a year. The winner, place, show, and one random horse out of the finished race will tested, and if any are found guilty, the trainer will be banned from the race for a year. If a trainer violates this rule three times, he will be banned from the race forever.

January 1st of 2009 will also begin the ban for anabolic steroids in all Breeder's Cup related races. Any racetrack that sponsors the Breeder's Cup or Win and You're In races must have anabolic steroids banned, or their offer will be turned down.

Hopefully, this ban will help Thoroughbred racing to become a powerful sport again with powerful horses, as it was in the old days. ~Cassidy Deardorff

And he does it again!!

Big Brown did it again in May 17th's Preakness Stakes. He broke from 7th post in a field of 12. Behindatthebar was scratched.
It took a burst of speed to get the champion out of the middle of all those horses. If he had been a few seconds slower, he might have got sandwiched in, and lost the race. But Kent Desmoraux did well and got him out of a fix. He then edged him over to third place on the outside with clear sailing.
Big Brown kept his position until the final turn, when he made a burst of speed. He was open-jawed, as Desmoraux was holding him in. And then they came, down the homestretch, to win the 133rd Preakness Stakes. No horse could keep up with them.
Dutrow said beforehand that he planned to have the colt held in. After the race, he then stated he believed that they would have enough horse to finish the Belmont Stakes off.
Big Brown will now run in the Belmont Stakes, Saturday, June 7th, at 6:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm CT. Will he become the 12th Triple Crown Winner?

The Preakness Stakes

The history of the Preakness Stakes dates back to the Pimlico course in 1873. A race, at the distance of a mile and a half, was run, and was named Preakness in honor of a colt from Milton Holbrook Sanford's Preakness Stables. Survivor won by 10 lengths, the largest margin of victory until 2004 (Smarty Jones). Today the Preakness has been run a total of 132 times, coming up on 133 in this year's race.
Be sure to be there! The entries and their post numbers are not firm yet. Big Brown will probably most certainly be entered, and more than likely will be the favorite as he was in the Derby. Winning from the outside post of 20 is quite an accomplishment. So far, no horse who was in the Derby has entered to re-challenge Big Brown.

Kentucky Derby 134--Trial and Triumph

There was trial and triumph in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
The triumph is, Big Brown won by about 5 or 7 lengths. He was the favorite at 5-2, and ran against a headwind. He was in the 20 post position. It's been a long, long time since any horse has won from 20, but Big Brown did.
The trial is Eight Belles.
She was the only filly in the race, a grey--almost black--17 hand high girl. After trying hard to win, she faltered near the finish line in second place, then broke both front ankles and went down--after having won the second place trophy. She was euthanized at the track, as broken legs are very painful for horses.
Big Brown, on the other hand, will now go into the Preakness and Belmont Stakes--perhaps to become the 12th Triple Crown Winner in history.
