WEST NILE VIRUS IN KENTUCKY
-------------------------------------

September 18, Kentucky Agriculture officials said that a 9-year-old Saddlebred gelding was confirmed with West Nile Virus (WNV). He had not been vaccinated.

The horse lives in Christian County, in southwest Kentucky. A statement by the Kentucky State Veterinarian's Office said the horse began to show clinical signs September 5.

As of September 17, the horse is still alive and improving, ".....with some mild rear limb ataxia remaining apparent."

Horses are highly susceptible to WNV; they should be vaccinated to prevent this. It, however, does not spread from horse to horse or horse to human. West Nile was recognized in North America in 1999. ~Equine Lover
